GR8 Parents
(December 2008 - November 2010)

Description of the project

"Gr8 Parents" is an innovative project which connects three different social groups by means of educational and cultural approaches: the parents, their kids and the kindergartens, as well as four EU Member States (Ellas, Latvia, Romania and Slovenia). Within its two-year lifetime, the project will promote the less well-known European Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning and will manage to train parents, who already act as a reserve of love and devotion, on how to form an informal “school” within their families that will aim at developing the creativity and improving the relationship and capabilities of both parents and their kids.

The parents’ training seminars will have the form of creative presentations and will be held in nursery schools and kindergartens by specially trained animators using various pedagogic tools some of which will be produced within the framework of the project and others will be taken from other relative community projects.

The main products of the project are: a poster depicting the domains and the definitions of the 8 Key Competences, lingual floor and table games, a multilingual puzzle game on the domains of the 8 Key Competences in 22 languages, multilingual audio clips of extracts of literature and teaching guidance materials that focus on didactic approaches on the implication of the Key Competences 1, 2 and 6 (communication in mother tongue, communication in foreign language and Interpersonal, intercultural and social competences). Other products are the website of the project, a need analysis survey and an evaluation survey. The project will also involve drug stores, bookstores, organic alimentation groceries, maternity clinics and children hospitals, which will act as distribution points for the products mentioned above.

Moreover, the project includes dissemination and exploitation activities aiming at the same target groups in France, Spain and Slovakia, as well as promotion and advertising activities through media, press and the Internet. The project is expected to make the European Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning known to the public and set new teaching standards and approaches to the Key Competences 1, 2 and 6.

Puzzle Game
with the Domains of the 8 Key Competences in 22 languages

Table game on Key Competences to be played within the family.

Materials

›› The table game poster
›› A dice
›› Two pawns of different colour

How to play

• Split your family in two teams, each led by an adult.
• Take two differently coloured pawns for each team and a dice.
• The teams cast the dice. The highest number starts first.
• Each team moves the pawn over a number of cases equivalent to the number obtained on the dice each time it is cast, starting at 1 and moving towards 100.
• When the pawn is on a blue square, the adult has to carry out a session developing a feature of the Key Competence with the corresponding number:

1  — Improve Knowledge, e.g. narrate a story and ask questions!
3  — Improve a Skill, e.g. make a craft construction!
2  — Improve a Positive Attitude, e.g. talk about a societal value!

• The winner is the team that reaches first the number 100.
• If you are on 99, you will win only if the dice you have cast shows 1.
• If it shows 2, you land back on 99, if it shows 3 you go back to 98 etc.

Good luck!
